Dr. Florence Rolston, board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, and a Pillar of Faith, Service, and Global Outreach

We’re  thankful for Dr. Florence Rolston who is graciously leading the 9 & 11 AM services on March 3rd. She is a devoted member of our parish and a steadfast presence on our vestry. Dr. Rolston not only brings her medical expertise but also a heart dedicated to service, evident in her recent mission trip to Ghana.

Professionally, Dr. Rolston is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, holding fellowship status with the  American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She earned her medical degree from the prestigious Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and completed her residency at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

Her commitment to healthcare goes beyond her private practice. Serving as a board member at Southampton Hospital since 2009, Dr. Rolston has been at the forefront of leadership. From Chairperson of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (2001-2003) to President of the Suffolk County Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (2008-2009), her impact has been profound.

In recognition of her expertise and contributions, Dr. Rolston holds the academic title of Clinical Assistant Professor, with special interests in cancer screening and menopause management.

Recently, Dr. Rolston embarked on a mission trip to Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, Ghana, as part of Operation International’s Women’s Health Team. From January 5-14, 2024, she volunteered her skills to perform a remarkable 63 surgeries, addressing critical cases such as breast surgery (including 11 cancer cases), minimally invasive GYN surgery, open GYN cases, and general surgery.

In addition to surgical interventions, Dr. Rolston and her team provided valuable lectures on topics vital to women’s health, including cervical cancer screening and postpartum hemorrhage. They also dedicated time to training 84 local staff on neonatal resuscitation, leaving a lasting impact on the community they served.

One poignant moment from the mission trip was Dr. Rolston’s encounter with Sonia, an 8-year-old girl seeking medical care for a large tumor. Dr. Rolston, along with her team, performed a critical assessment and added Sonia to the surgery schedule, bringing hope and healing to a young life in need.

Dr. Rolston expresses her deep gratitude to the Outreach committee and St. John’s for supporting this mission trip. Through your generosity, lives were transformed, and essential medical care reached those in need.

As a community, let us celebrate Dr. Florence Rolston’s dedication to faith, service, and global outreach as she leads us in worship and shares the inspiring impact of her recent mission trip with us.
